After the Lockdown

Black-tailed Jackrabbit, Point Reyes National Seashore

During the lockdown, I was happy to stay home for a while and give my usual wildlife places a break. When I go there, social distancing isn’t usually a problem, but sheltering in place was the right thing to do, especially as the communities near places like Point Reyes didn’t need anyone else coming in, potentially putting a strain on their available resources. Having said that, I was pleased to be back out there once the restrictions started to lift.

I spent a lot of time looking for bobcats on my first couple of trips. I only saw one and got zero photos. But I was pleasantly surprised to encounter a bunch of animals I don’t usually see. Black-tailed jackrabbits were one, and skunks another. I also found four skunks moving as a group. When they saw me, they turned and charged toward me, chasing me right out of their field! The highlight had to be a gray fox, though. I only had thirty seconds with it, but I made it count. It’s good to be back outdoors.
